Hi everyone. For this edition of Truly Judy’s Uncommon Oldies, we travel to KGW, 620 AM, in Portland, Oregon, to their Big W Survey from September, 1959.
My survey artist, Ricky Nelson, was born in Teaneck, New Jersey, in 1940. He, along with his brother, David, first appeared on their parents’ radio show, “The Adventures Of Ozzie and Harriet”, in 1949. In 1952, the show first appeared on TV and ran in first-run episodes until 1966.
Rick’s first released record was “A Teenager’s Romance”, on the Verve label, in 1957. The B side was “I’m Walkin”, which was a hit for Fats Domino a few months earlier. “A Teenager’s Romance” was #2 on Billboard while I’m Walkin’ was #4.
Ricky and Lorrie Collins, of The Collins Kids, had a relationship when he was 18 and she was 15. She had been on The Ozzie & Harriet TV show, in one episode, and she and Rick co-wrote Rick’s song, My Gal. She also introduced Rick to Johnny Cash and Tex Ritter because she had been on a weekly TV show called Town Hall Party.
On the KGW 620 AM Big W Survey, in Portland, Oregon, in September of 1959, at #22, here is Ricky Nelson with One Minute To One on the Imperial label.
