This week, Truly Judy’s Uncommon Oldies takes us to KAZZ 95.5 FM in Austin, Texas, to their Fun Fifty Hit List in April 1965.
My survey artists, Ian & the Zodiacs, were from Liverpool and they started as a trad jazz band in 1958. They became major stars in Germany starting in 1964, and they stayed in Germany for 3 years.
The group centered on covers of Motown songs, current US hits, blues and some pop-jazz. Some of their songs were released in the US, but they never found a big following in the US nor in Great Britain.
My survey song was written by and recorded in 1937 by Sonny Boy Williamson. His version was just called Good Morning, School Girl. There have been recordings of the song with the title Little School Girl and Good Morning, Little Schoolgirl.
On the KAZZ Fun Fifty Hit List in April 1965 as a hitbound, here are Ian & the Zodiacs with Good Morning, Little Schoolgirl, a great little British R& B blues number on the Philips label. This group should have been much bigger here in the states, and I absolutely love this version. I hope you enjoy it, too.
