Truly Judy’s Uncommon Oldies takes us to December of 1961 to 2 GB 870 AM’s Official Big 60 survey in Sydney, Australia.

My artist of the week, Johnny Devlin, was born on the North Island in New Zealand and was an influential early rock musician there.  He was sometimes even called “New Zealand’s answer to Elvis Presley”.

Johnny’s cover of Lloyd Price’s “Lawdy Miss Clawdy” in 1958 went to number one in New Zealand. He spent much of his time in Australia in 1959 touring in support of the Everly Brothers and often appeared on Australian television shows such as Bandstand and Six O’Clock Rock. In 1964 he toured Australia as a support act for The Beatles.

On the 2 GB 870 AM’s Official Big 60 survey, in Sydney, Australia, at #51, in December of 1961, here is Johnny Devlin with Hey Little Angel on the Festival label.
